Ladies – Oct Medal

A lovely, bright day dawned for the October medal. Nine ladies gathered and set off into the brightness...   The course played a bit easier (I missed that memo) and CSS was -1. The second group focussing on the putt and not the view...         Two-thirds of the second group pausing on 5th for piccie...   When the scorecards were tallied, the winner today was Erica with a terrific 67. Fabulous round! Following closely behind was Marena on 70 and Annie on 73. Nicely done. For individual mentions in dispatches: we had no 2's today but…

Pull up a chair and a drink...plenty of news to update since we last chatted:   Sat 21st Sep: Medal Final   Beautiful weather for the Medal Final. Six competitors headed out for a lovely round - though conditions proved tricky enough for it to become reduction-only. We also introduced preferred lies as conditions were a little damp underfoot. No twos were recorded. Scores on the doors were: 1st Janette 76 2nd Erica 79 3rd Jackie 80 (on count back from Marena over last 9 holes)   Well done everyone!   Sadly, to overcome the shame over my performance  I…

Ladies Update – Chocfest 2019

Known officially as "Kay's Hike" - it's all about the lovely Swiss chocolate. It's so delicious that all ten of us climbed all the way up to the former men's first green to fill our faces. Yum.   Designated a par 5 for the day, a respectable amount of the field gathered from points here today. Anne and Erica topped the pack with 2 points each. Well done everyone who scored here! Our group had a nice chip off at the 6th...     We also found some more scary mushrooms...   Today's view of the loch...   Back at…

Ladies Update – Centenary Cup

The Centenary Cup (aka 3 clubs and a putter) yesterday saw 6 intrepid golfers head out into the dazzling sunshine with - wait for it - only three clubs and a putter in their bag. Having trusted my club selection to a random hands-behind-the-back selection in the car park - I was lined up and ready with a 4 rescue, 7 iron, pitching wedge and putter. Most people had some combination of favourite long club, a medium iron and a wedge. Though Kay, being iron-phobic, probably had 4 woods. It got fairly gusty half way round, but conditions were dry…

Ladies Update – Circle 3 aka “Pigs in Mud”

It was back to the sunblock and sun-hat for circle week 3. I must admit the hat was strapped on front and back to cope with the gusts though! Seven ladies ventured out this morning in a daring, and somewhat controversial, permutation: a three ball and a four ball.  Teeing off into the dazzling sun on the 2nd Erica, Christine and I set off first. After warming up on the first couple of holes we all got into our groove for a successful third hole. Christine had a great net par here- by common consent the hardest hole on the…

Ladies Update- September Medal

What a day of sport...   Though I'm confused by a 'sport' where you let all your team-mates do the hard work so you can sprint over the line? Anyway, back to the true sport of Gods... We had two flavours of medal today- 9 hole and 18 hole. And seven lovely ladies turned out to make the most of the glorious weather.   The course played a wee bit tricky in the sun with conditions a bit muddy in places and preferred lies not yet available. Nobody managed a two - so the jackpot is now visible from the…

Ladies Update – Circle 2

Yesterday we contested Circle week 2. Not to be confused with Dante's Circles. Though I understand that after the first circle of limbo, the second circle is where the punishments begin properly. The travellers are blown violently back and forth by strong winds, preventing them from finding peace and rest. Hmmmm, wherever did Dante get his inspiration? I wasn't aware he'd golfed in Scotland.     The weather had indeed blown itself up into a bit of a hooley. There were some exciting, swirling gusts and a fair amount of rain for our journey round the course. Fortunately, with only…

Ladies Update: Muirhead Rosebowl Open
Up for grabs... the Muirhead Rosebowl

Ladies Update: Muirhead Rosebowl Open

Today we welcomed more than twenty golfers for the re-scheduled Muirhead Rosebowl Open.   Early starters contended with rain most of the way round. But the dry weather turned out in time for some of the later pairs. As a result, the course played a wee bit 'tricky'. The CSS went up by 2 to 70.   To prove it was tricky, only one person made it round blob-free. Perhaps fittingly, it was the eventual winner. More surprising was the fact that there was only one two all day. Despite my promise in the clubhouse (ok, it was more of…

Ladies Update – Circle week 1

Don't be fooled by the shorts...winter is coming!   It must be nearly winter because we started the Circle Competition this week. How it works: you have multiple rounds to get your best card. The trick is to lock in a good score at each hole (by circling it on your card). What you want to avoid is running up a rugby score on the last round when you must circle that hole!   I can't report on the results as the scores are a SECRET! But I can guess that either 1) Elena had the best round or 2)…

Ladies Update – Doris McQueen Memorial

Well, what a lovely day for the eider, mandarins and mallards. Not so much for the golfers. Being made of stern stuff, 9 of us went out for the Doris McQueen memorial today. I wasn't lucky enough to have known Doris, but by all accounts she was a well-loved member of the club and is still sorely missed. We were lucky to have her partner Duncan on hand to present the trophy after lunch and share some lovely memories. It was a bit dreich on the course for taking pictures but I did spot this red kite circling hopefully in…
